Tepoztlán: One of the favorite getaways to disconnect from the routine

How to get to Tepoztlán from Mexico City

One of the great appeals of Tepoztlán is that it is very easy to include in a weekend trip. From Mexico City, the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your starting point and traffic conditions.

The most common route begins on the Mexico-Cuernavaca highway (95D), and then connects to the road that leads directly into town. The route crosses the forested areas south of the capital and, as you descend toward Morelos, the weather begins to change, turning into one of the trip's biggest highlights.

What is the best time to leave?

If you plan to visit Tepoztlán during the weekend, it is best to leave Mexico City before 8:00 in the morning. In addition to avoiding some of the outbound traffic, arriving early will allow you to explore the historic center more calmly and begin the hike up El Tepozteco before the temperature rises.

On Sunday afternoons, there is usually significant traffic returning to the city, so it is advisable to head back before 4:00 p.m. or wait until after dark.

A stop before arriving: Tres Marías

If you are starting from Mexico City, a great option to kick off the trip is to make a brief stop in Tres Marías.

This town is widely known for its traditional quesadillas made fresh to order, along with other Mexican snacks that have been part of the experience for travelers driving this highway for decades.

It is a great place to have breakfast before continuing your journey and enjoying the forested landscape that characterizes this part of Morelos.

The history of Tepoztlán: Between legends, mountains, and tradition

Long before becoming a tourist destination, Tepoztlán was already considered a place of great importance to the pre-Hispanic peoples who inhabited this region.

Its name comes from the Nahuatl word Tepoztlán, which is usually translated as "place of copper" or "place of copper axes," referring to the metal that was anciently worked in the area.

According to tradition, this town is also linked to the birth of Tepoztécatl, one of the deities associated with pulque, fertility, and harvests, whose story continues to be part of local folklore.

During the colonial period, Dominican friars built the Ex-Convent of the Nativity, one of the most important 16th-century religious complexes and currently part of the heritage recognized by UNESCO within the 16th-century monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl.

How many days is it worth staying in Tepoztlán?

It is possible to visit Tepoztlán in a single day, but doing so means rushing through the town and leaving out some of its most interesting experiences.

The recommendation is to dedicate at least a full weekend. This way, you can hike up El Tepozteco early, explore the ex-convent at a relaxed pace, enjoy the local gastronomy, visit the market, and still reserve time to discover some nearby spots that most visitors overlook.

Places worth discovering near Tepoztlán

One of the advantages of choosing Tepoztlán for a getaway is that you don't need to travel great distances to keep discovering interesting places. In less than an hour, you can completely change the scenery and explore communities surrounded by forests, old convents, or natural springs that wonderfully complement a weekend in Morelos.

  • Amatlán de Quetzalcóatl: A village among mountains and legends: Less than ten minutes from downtown Tepoztlán is Amatlán, a small community that, according to tradition, is the birthplace of Quetzalcóatl. Beyond the legends, it is a perfect spot for those seeking quiet walks, artisanal workshops, or simply a much quieter atmosphere than downtown Tepoztlán. The surroundings also offer ideal trails for hiking and admiring the mountainous landscape that characterizes this region of Morelos.
  • Santo Domingo Ocotitlán: Nature and gastronomy: If you enjoy the outdoors, Santo Domingo Ocotitlán is an excellent alternative. This village is surrounded by pine and oak forests that are part of El Tepozteco National Park, making it a starting point for activities like hiking, mountain biking, and touring rural roads. It is also known for its rustic country restaurants, where you can try traditional dishes prepared with local ingredients while enjoying an atmosphere completely different from that of the Magical Town's center.
  • Oaxtepec: History, gardens, and a different return route to CDMX: If your return trip is toward Mexico City, it's worth considering a stop in Oaxtepec, located just over 30 minutes from Tepoztlán. This destination was one of the most important botanical gardens during pre-Hispanic times by initiative of the tlatoani Moctezuma Ilhuicamina and, centuries later, established itself as one of the country's main resort centers. Today, it offers water parks, gardens, and recreational spaces that can be a great way to close out the weekend before heading back.

Instead of limiting your visit strictly to downtown Tepoztlán, you can extend your drive to Amatlán, Santo Domingo Ocotitlán, or Oaxtepec, stopping wherever sparks your curiosity.

For getaways like this, the biggest advantage isn't just the transportation—it's the freedom to head out early on Saturday, return at a relaxed pace on Sunday, pack whatever luggage you need for the weekend, or change plans on the fly if you discover a restaurant, viewpoint, or trail that wasn't on the original itinerary.

Between the mountains, cobblestone streets, traditional markets, and trails leading up to El Tepozteco, the town invites you to leave the routine behind and enjoy every moment without rush.
