Mazunte, a Relaxing Magical Town on the Coast of Oaxaca

Mazunte: Discover One of Oaxaca's Most Special Beaches

There are places on the coast of Oaxaca that invite you to slow down from the moment you arrive. Mazunte is one of them. Between the sea, the vegetation, and the small streets leading to the coast, this Magical Town (Pueblo Mágico) has a personality of its own that is enjoyed just as much by walking around as it is on a road trip getaway.

Besides visiting Mazunte beach, you can head over to Punta Cometa to gaze at the Pacific, visit other beaches in the area, or make a stop at nearby communities like San Agustinillo and Zipolite. The road allows you to combine several of these places into a single route.

What makes Mazunte special?

Mazunte is located on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, near other well-known destinations like Puerto Ángel, San Agustinillo, and Zipolite. Its size allows you to explore much of the town on foot, while its surroundings offer options to spend several days between the beach and nature.

If you are looking for things to do in Mazunte, you can start with its beaches and then dedicate part of the day to visiting Punta Cometa, one of the most iconic spots in the area.

It is also worth setting aside time to simply sit by the sea, try a local dish, or walk through the town's streets. Here, the itinerary can be simple: choose a beach, get something to eat, and decide later where to watch the sunset.

Mazunte Beach: A Morning Facing the Pacific

Mazunte beach is one of the town's main attractions. Its location allows you to combine a few hours by the sea with a walk around the area and a meal at one of the local restaurants.

The Pacific waves can be strong, so it is advisable to check the sea conditions before entering the water and to follow the lifeguards' instructions.

If you want to discover more of Mazunte's beaches and its surroundings, you can extend your trip toward San Agustinillo or Mermejita beach. Both have a different vibe and are a short distance from each other.

Punta Cometa: The Place to Watch the Sun Go Down

If there is a place that deserves its own space on any trip to Mazunte, it is Punta Cometa, located at the western end of Mazunte beach, accessible by walking from town along a trail.

The main access from Mazunte involves an approximately 15 to 20-minute walk along a sloped path. To arrive in time for sunset, it is recommended to start with plenty of time and wear comfortable shoes.

From these natural viewpoints, you can look out over the ocean and, weather permitting, enjoy one of the most beautiful moments of the day on the Oaxacan coast. The site also holds cultural significance for the community and is considered a place of natural and spiritual value.

If you visit Punta Cometa at the end of the day, remember that you will have to walk back to Mazunte. Bring water, avoid leaving trash, and only use authorized trails.

San Agustinillo and Other Beaches Near Mazunte

One of the advantages of exploring this area is that you don't need to stay in just one spot. San Agustinillo is very close to Mazunte and is a great option for a change of scenery during the day.

You can also head over to Mermejita beach, located toward the Punta Cometa side, or continue by road toward Zipolite and Puerto Ángel if you have more time.

La Ventanilla: Nature Just a Few Kilometers from Mazunte

If you want to do something different from spending the day by the sea, add La Ventanilla to your itinerary. This small community is nestled between the mangrove and the ocean, offering ecological tours through the lagoon.

Community-led tours allow you to explore the mangrove ecosystem and observe species such as crocodiles, iguanas, and birds. The community also works on projects related to environmental conservation and education.

It is a great alternative for those who want to see another side of the Oaxaca coast and dedicate a few hours to nature before returning to Mazunte.

What to Eat in Mazunte?

After a morning at the beach or a hike to Punta Cometa, the gastronomy is another great reason to stay a while longer.

In Mazunte, you will find restaurants and small eateries offering Oaxacan cuisine, fish, seafood, and more international options. You can also look for local products and enjoy a refreshing drink while taking a break from the heat.

If you are going to explore different coastal towns, take the opportunity to eat at local spots and try different preparations. The culinary experience changes from one community to another and is a simple way to get to know the region.

How to Get to Mazunte?

One of the most practical ways to get there is by road from Puerto Escondido or Huatulco, taking Federal Highway 200 to the San Antonio intersection, and then the road toward Mazunte and San Agustinillo. From Oaxaca City, the new Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway has significantly reduced travel times to the coast, although the final time depends on the departure point, traffic, and road conditions.

If you arrive by plane, an alternative is to pick up a vehicle at the Enterprise branch in Puerto Escondido and start your coastal journey from there. Enterprise has an office at the Hotel Posada Real in Puerto Escondido, from where you can organize a getaway to Mazunte and other destinations in Oaxaca.

There is also an Enterprise branch at the Oaxaca International Airport, an option to consider if you want to start your trip from the state capital. The office offers different categories of cars, SUVs, and vans subject to availability.

For a coastal road trip, check the road conditions in advance and try to drive during the day. Some sections of the coastal highway have curves, speed bumps, and only one lane in each direction, so it is best to leave with plenty of time and make stops when you need to.

A Getaway to Enjoy the Coast of Oaxaca

Mazunte has something that makes it easy to stay one more day. You can start with a morning at the beach, hike up to Punta Cometa in the afternoon, and end up facing the sea as the sun begins to set. The next day, you can visit San Agustinillo, La Ventanilla, or continue to other towns along the coast.

If you are thinking about visiting more than one destination, renting a car allows you to take your luggage with you and organize your stops according to the days you have available. Check the car rental options in Oaxaca and choose the vehicle that best fits your trip.
