travel by Riviera Maya: freedom y nature conservation.
What does
freedom mean to you?
For me it is everything. The power to decide what to do with my life and my time, my way. Who do I want to be? How do I want to live? Where I want to go? To what do I want to dedicate my days and energy?
A long time ago I decided that my path was sports, and for more than 10 years I have dedicated myself to it, traveling all over
Mexico to compete. I have really enjoyed my life, getting together with my friends, renting a car, loading the suitcases and heading to the next race.
Who would have said that today
renting a car is still just as fun, but now with a new meaning?
A year ago I understood that my mission is to help to those who like me, were born to live in freedom, but are gradually losing it as a result of the actions of us all. I’m referring to wild animals, these incredible creatures that inhabit and give life to this planet but are now disappearing.
That is why I started the
Wimook Foundation that supports the conservation of wild species in danger of extinction. With this new mission I arrived at the corals. Do you know the importance of these animals? Because yes, corals are not rocks or plants, they are animals.
It turns out that corals not only give life to 25% of all
marine species, but they also function as a buffer against global warming, so that it does not directly impact human beings. It is the corals that are absorbing the heat to the degree that today, they are boiling alive. If coral reefs were to be extinguished, that excessive heat would go directly to people. Therefore, it is imperative to be aware of its importance and preservation.
Upon discovering this, I decided to take a trip to the Riviera Maya to learn more about the subject and how we can help. I decided to
rent a car because I would have the freedom to move around everywhere and have the chance to encounter other species in the area such as the
spider monkey that are also in danger of disappearing.
I was in
Cancun for about two weeks. I picked up my car at the airport and went to
Playa del Carmen where for the first 5 days I was working on three different reefs in Playa and Cozumel with Cristina, from
Coral Héroe.
I had the opportunity to dive with her, and in addition to being able to enjoy the beach and the beautiful and unique marine life, I learned to distinguish the different types of coral.
After the fifth day I took the car again and drove to
Tulum, where I met with Marlon from “El Viaje de Kanan”, a sustainable tourism agency, and Ceci Cajúm, biologist in charge of conservation programs in Punta Laguna.
The visit with them to the jungle was spectacular! We had the chance to see a couple of howler monkeys and a whole family of spider monkeys. Nothing compares to seeing them released! I was lucky enough to see several mothers with their young. We saw how they were taught to look for fruits to eat and I learned a lot about the importance of the species.
Those days traveling throughout the Riviera Maya were extremely rewarding, learning from the best and experiencing a change of consciousness.
I am super happy to have the opportunity to take trips that in addition to nurturing the soul, are for a good cause. Keep following our adventures on our Instagram account
